Union Protein Project Community Forum - Richmond
6480 Blundell Road Richmond
Richmond, BC V7C 1H8
Each year we invite all affiliates to participate in our community forum with Union Protein Project (formerly Protein for People). The forum brings together families from the community, food bank clients, labour leaders and activists, and representatives from community based service organizations.
VDLC affiliates and community groups are invited to set up information tables at these events. Each event will feature speakers, musicians, BBQ, and a children’s area with face painting, crafts, and games.
Union Protein Project started as “Protein for People”; a labour initiative funded by union donations and the United Way to provide “labour fished and processed” canned salmon to food banks across BC. It has since expanded into providing tuna and peanut butter as well and serves not only BC, but Alberta as well.
A growing number of people, both working and unemployed, are forced to turn to food banks to feed their families. In fact, over 32% of BC food bank users are children.
Protein is critical to a healthy diet and crucial to mental and physical development. Union Protein Project donates union canned salmon, tuna, and peanut butter and helps food banks to maximize their purchasing power through large volume buying.
Each year, the Union Protein Project partners with labour councils to host community forums to connect people with valuable resources and the labour movement.
What we need:
We are asking our affiliates and friends to participate in the following ways:
Union tables – Please supply your own volunteers, materials and, if desired, a canopy. You are encouraged to have small games or interactive activities, free draws, small give-away items, and literature. Prizes could include gift certificates to unionized grocery stores, toys or small new household items (please no high priced items). We also hope that your volunteers will wear their union clothing to display your logo.
Donations – Any financial donation to assist with the costs of the events are welcome (cheques payable to VDLC and noting Union Protein Project as the subject). We also appreciate the donations of new socks, toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant etc. for “grab bags”, and non-perishable food items are all welcome.
Volunteers – In the weeks before the forum we need help getting out the information for the community events and Union Protein Project. Please keep us in mind when talking with friends and colleagues. Any volunteers to help with set up, cooking, games, and clean up would be greatly appreciated.
Promotion – A poster is available HERE, we ask that you help circulate the information, announce the events at upcoming meetings, and plan to participate.
Please contact Kathryn Prinz for more information, to volunteer, to donate, or to reserve a table –
VDLCEC@gmail.com or 604.727.7711 (call or text).
Thank you for your invaluable support. We look forward to seeing you there!
