Vancouver & District Labour Council Announces 2009 Syd Thompson Labour Community Service Award Winner
The Vancouver and District Labour Council is Pleased to announce that David Chudnovsky will be the 2009 recipient of the VDLC’s Syd Thompson Labour Community Service Award.
David Chudnovsky was born and raised in Toronto but has lived in Vancouver for more than 26 years.
David began his labour career in Toronto as a member of CUPE. Upon moving to British Columbia, David became a teacher and a member of the Surrey Teachers’ Association. Always a community minded activist, David supported the creation of the Canadian Farmworkers’ Union, the BC Organization to Fight Racism, and the Coalition of Progressive Electors in Vancouver. He served as President of the Surrey Teachers Association for several years and ultimately became President of the BC Teachers Federation. He was elected as an MLA for Vancouver Kensington in 2005 and served as Opposition Critic for Homelessness and Mental Health.
One of his proudest achievements has been his work in developing the Charter for Public Education. The Charter is a statement, based on community input from across BC, of common values, principles and commitments to public education in this province.
David is an active community volunteer. He coaches hockey and softball and has served as a board member with Surrey-Delta Immigrant Services Society and Check Your Head Youth Global Awareness Network. He has also volunteered abroad working with teachers and students in Johannesburg as part of a union training workshop for leaders of the South African Democratic Teacher’s Union.
We will present Brother Chudnovsky with the Community Service award at the 26th Annual United Way Labour Appreciation Dinner to be held
