Vancouver and District Labour Council names Judith Radovan
“Labour Woman of the Year”

The Vancouver and District Labour Council will honour BC Nurses Union member Judith Radovan with the VDLC's "Labour Woman of the Year" award at an International Woman's Day Dinner this evening.

“Judith Radovan is a very worthy recipient of this inaugural award,” said Marion Pollack, Co-chair of the Labour Council's Women’s Committee.  “In her very busy life, Judith manages to blend union activism and community activism with a sense of justice and a sense of humour.”

Briefly imprisoned in Chile under the Pinochet regime, Judith Radovan immigrated to Canada as a refugee in the 1970's and trained to become a registered nurse.  Well known in the labour movement for her involvement in the BC Nurses Union, Judith was elected to the Executive of the Vancouver and District Labour Council in 1999.

Judith has also been very prominent in the women’s movement and the Latin-American community in Vancouver and has been one of the principal organizers of International Women's Day events in the city for the past ten years.

"It is very appropriate on this International Women’s Day for the Labour Council to be honouring Judith who has played such a prominent role in promoting this day," said Mable Elmore, the other Co-chair of the Women’s Committee.  "Judith is an excellent example of the type of activism that the Vancouver and District Labour Council promotes."

Judith Radovan will receive her award at the VDLC's annual International Women’s Day dinner at the Fraserview Hall in Vancouver this evening.
