Labour Day "Elsies"
Metro Vancouver, BC
The Vancouver and District Labour Council and New Westminster and District Labour Council will be jointly hosting a virtual Labour Day celebration this year. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and in keeping with recommendations from health authorities and government, we have cancelled our plans for an in-person event. But we are very excited to announce we will be holding a joint online event for affiliated unions, delegates, and members on September 7.
Please join us for this unique event to recognize the incredible contributions of union members from across the Metro Vancouver region during the past year.
Labour Day is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of workers and is a tribute to the contributions working people have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country. The recent pandemic has served to expose and underline the critical and fundamental role of workers and their families in our communities, our economy and our society. Our virtual event will celebrate and highlight these vital contributions.
We are calling for nominations for our first ever Labour Council Elsies. These Oscar-style awards will recognize union members for their outstanding contributions in the labour movement. Members and Affiliated Locals can complete the attached form to nominate a union member in one of four categories: Awesome Union Activist, Outstanding Shop Steward, Dedicated Front Line Worker or Caring Community Activist. We will be highlighting three nominees from each category in a short video that will be played on Labour Day. Highlighted nominees will have an opportunity to speak about their activism, their union, and what Labour Day means to them as they accept our first ever Elsie (Labour Council) awards.
Nominees and their union must agree to being filmed with the award presentations to be posted on Labour Council websites and social media on September 7. Nominations are open now and close on August 4, 2020 at 4:30pm.
Labour Day for kids
Labour Day has always included our families and in keeping with our tradition of having children’s activities at our events we are holding a Labour Day colouring challenge. The challenge is open to all, submissions will be posted on our social media pages from mid August to mid September.
Thank you in advance for helping us make this a successful virtual event. If you have any questions please contact the Labour Council office at (604) 254-0703 or our event organizer Laura Sharpe at email@example.com.
